The fauna of the plain regions in the Orinoquía, in Colombia and Venezuela, characterized by its diversity and, to a large extent, unknown, due to the wild and wooded terrain and the immensity of its savannahs, only allows us to talk about the wide variety of animals that inhabit the Creole region and which is represented by the following group:
Araguato: Large monkey (Alouatta seniculus), with dark fawn fur, shaggy hair on the head and thick beard. The araguato is the largest of the American monkeys.
Squirrel: The red squirrel (Sciurus igniventris) is very common in Vichada. It basically feeds on palm nuts.
Armadillo: The sabanero cachicamo (Dasypus sabanicola), is a common species in the Llano region of Colombia and Venezuela; lives in the savannah, in thickets, in open areas and near stone formations, reaching 60 cm in length and weighing 9.5 kg; It has very little hair and basically feeds on ants. The largest armadillo in the world is found in the eastern plains of Colombia.
Caiman: The Orinoco crocodile, Orinoco caiman or plain caiman (Crocodylus intermedius), lives in the Orinoco basin and in the Cojedes and Capanaparo rivers; It is considered the largest predator in Latin America and one of the largest species of crocodile, with a maximum known length of seven meters. The plain caiman is an endangered species.
Caribe: Omnivorous fish, typical of the Colombian-Venezuelan plains (Pygocentrus Cariba), commonly found in the waters of the Orinoco River and that grows between 15 and 25 cm on average, but In favorable conditions, it can measure up to 60 cm in length. The color of the fish can be silver, or blackish with red, orange, greenish, bluish or violet colorations; Sometimes they have black spots.
The Caribe has very sharp and pointed triangular teeth. Each jaw has a single row of teeth. The lower jaw protrudes a little from the upper jaw.
Cafuche: The wild pig (Tayassu pecari), also known as Chacharo, Cerillo, Cerdillo, Jabalí, Puerco de monte, Tatabra, Zaino, usually walks in a herd. The Cafuche is an omnivorous species and it is common to find them in clay soils, bathing in swampy lands. They protect themselves from their predators in natural caves, which they also use to rest and as a place for pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding.
Capybara: Also called Chigüiro or Carpincho, it is the largest rodent in the world. Capybaras prefer to roam near rivers, lakes, or mangroves, although they can also be seen in dry and arid areas such as savannas or in grassy areas.
Opossum: The common opossum, calatrupa, carachupa, common opossum, raposa, rabipelado, runcho, tacuazín, fara, southern opossum, cangrejera, bald-tailed fox or guazalo, is a species of marsupial, omnivorous (Didelphis marsupialis).
Danta: Also known as Tapir (tapirus terrestris), it is commonly found in low-altitude areas such as the Amazon jungles, but can reach up to 1700 meters of altitude. It also travels along the water trails in the eastern Colombian plains and the savanna areas of Venezuela. The tapir is an endangered species.
Lapa: Also called Guagua (Agouti paca), it is a rodent that grows up to 80 cm. in length, with a tail that does not exceed 2 cm and can weigh up to 10 kg. Its fur is dark brown and on each side of the body there are 4 rows of white spots. The limpet is strictly nocturnal and generally lives in dense and high forested areas, on the banks of streams, ravines or rivers, in swampy or flooded areas, low and humid or mountainous and temperate.
Mato: The Colombian peni or teyú (Tupinambis teguixin) is a species of lizard that can measure up to 1.5 m. The mato is omnivorous and usually sleeps in caves.
Morrocoy: The red-footed land turtle or morrocoy turtle (Chelonoidis carbonaria), is a herbivore and scavenger. It lives in jungle areas and also lives in the savanna, including grasslands resulting from livestock, logging, and on land burned for planting.
Ñeque: The agoutí or picure (Myoprocta sop) is a medium-sized wild rodent. The ñeque lives in humid, dry, riverine forests and scrub areas and is also found on the banks of streams, rivers and lakes.
Deer: The Deer (Cervus elaphus) is a mammalian animal also known as common deer or red deer. It feeds on wild fruits and grazes cautiously in the savanna, eating the shoots of the grass when the sun begins to set. The reddish sun in the afternoon (Between 4:45 and 5:30), is known as "The Sun of the Deer".
